I wrote my first song ever on my own today.
It began with this tiny piece of music I wrote on guitar a year ago. I was in Dublin and strumming these chords on a guitar one day singing about the way I was feeling...
“I’ve been down a lonely street tonight, and I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Clouds cover up a Dublin sky, and I don’t know what’s left of me, I don’t know what’s right with me..”
And then a year went by. I took a road trip to L.A and right before I went to bed I came up with the rest of the chords and lyrics and the song just finished itself. It’s amazing the way that happens. Right from the beginning I knew what the song was about, I knew it was going to be heavy and that it was going to be the introduction to an album that would take me down some darker and not so happy places. I knew I had to go there.but I was stalling. I’d been avoiding dealing with my emotions and the subject matter for long enough. For as long as I could I had been putting off writing songs for my next album because I knew once I went into this headspace it would be a while before I could surface.
But I’m happy to say that it felt good to open up this old wound.
Felt good to get some hurt out and I’m ready to start telling a story.

17th May 2003 - Birthday Thanks from Darren I wanted to say thank you to everyone for making my birthday 'in hiding' a fantastic one. I was overwhelmed by the emails, letters and gifts. You shouldn't have is what I'm supposed to say. But in reality, it made me feel very special. Sorry I've forgotten most of your birthdays! Could you imagine if you expected me to remember? Could you imagine if I did remember. How incredible would I be? I can imagine my VH1 before they were stars interview with a voice over saying 'all this.. and on top of it all...the MOST thoughtful entertainer because he personally sings happy birthday to his fans in a g-string'. Actually I made up the part about the g-string. And the VH1 thing. And I hate g-strings. My point is I wish I could return the favour. So I'll have to just make sure this is THE MOST INCREDIBLE ALBUM EVER. Yes I'm working on one. Ooops am I supposed to say that? Oh well....just did. Love you.. xD

Quiero decirles gracias a todos por hacer que mi cumpleaños 'de incognito' fuera fantastico. Estuve inundado de mails, cartas y regalos. Se supone que debo de decirles que no debieron. Pero en realidad, me hicieron sentir muy especial. Disculpenme si he olvidado la mayoria de sus cumpleaños! Se imaginan si esperaran que lo recordara? Imaginense si lo recordara. Que tan increible seria? Puedo imaginarme mi VH1 antes de todas las entrevistas con una voz diciendo 'todo esto.. y por encima de todo.. el artista MAS considerado porque personalmente les canta 'happy birthday' a sus fans en una tanga'. De hecho invente lo de la tanga. Y lo de VH1. Y odio las tangas. El punto es que deseo poder regresarles el favor. Asi que tendre que asegurarme de que este sea EL DISCO MAS INCREIBLE QUE EXISTA. Si, estoy trabajando en uno. Ooops! Se supone que puedo decir eso? oh bueno....ya lo hice Los quiero.. xD
